You pick 1) a song by Beyoncé I don’t believe is even a good representation of her music.

2) the most popular song ever by Queen.

You are not making some super special point by comparing two COMPLETELY different songs (and artists!) from different times. This reeks of racism, and misogyny. Good job.

(If I have errors I’m sorry, I posted from my phone)

Spot on. This reeks of racism and sexism, not to mention a heap of nostalgia blindness.

I’ll be honest here, I’ve never really understood what the big deal is about Bohemian Rhapsody….

Not that I think it’s a bad song or whatever, but I don’t get excited when it comes on. Even though the lyrics are really good, I just don’t feel connected to the words and I’ve heard far better production done by one person so that doesn’t exactly impress me either…

Also, not taking into consideration that these 2 songs shouldn’t be compared, Run the World, while simple does serve to incite confidence to a group of people who are underrepresented and often oppressed. Bohemian Rhapsody is telling a neat, but arbitrary (correct me if I’m wrong, I’m not too well versed in Queen’s music) story.

So in terms of how each songs on a societal level, Run the World is actually spreading a message. Just as one might find at a protest, sometimes the only way to get one’s point across is to repeat it.

Yeah. Not to discredit Queen as artists, because they’re a staple in the greater narrative of musical history, but this image is bunk.

I know I don’t usually post opinion things, but I had a lot of feelings about this post

First, I don’t understand where the ‘racist’ and ‘sexist’ accusations are coming from - whoever made this picture was just trying to show pop music NOW vs. pop/rock music back in the day. I think comparing music now to music from the 70s is really unfair in itself, but yeah, not great choices for comparison. There was no real grudge against what Beyonce stands for with what this person chose. They just don’t know anything about Beyonce or her music.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” (along with Queen’s whole career really) revolutionized theatrical music performances, which Beyonce and other current pop stars owe their success and influence to. As for Freddie Mercury: he was an icon and a hero to many people. HIV awareness, gay rights, real theatrical/rock frontmen. “Bohemian Rhapsody,” especially, seems arbitrary on the surface, but it’s so much deeper. It’s about learning to face death, like Mercury had to about a decade after this song was released when he was diagnosed with HIV. It’s about not feeling sorry for yourself. It’s about helping your friends carry on and live in your image and follow your example as a good, caring, meaningful human being long after you’re gone, like Freddie has for many people for many different reasons.

You can discount the argument this person was trying to make, but don’t discount Queen and Freddie.

Thank you for clarifying Bohemian Rhapsody’s meaning for me, I really appreciate it!

justflailing:

The LP, which is executive produced by Timbaland, only contains 10 records and the features are not yet listed. The visual for the lead single ‘Suit & Tie’ has already been shot and should be dropping soon. We also heard ‘Pusher Love Girl’ and ‘That Girl’ at the DIRECTV Super Bowl XLVII party. The album will be hitting stores on March 19th.

Tracklist:

1. Glutton [Produced By: NumberNin6]
2. Centerfold [Produced By: Chew Fu]
3. Filthy (XXX) [Produced By: Tonedeff]
4. Never [Produced By: Tonedeff]
5. Sunrise [Produced By: Tonedeff]

Each Polymer EP will be denoted by this logo

About Polymer

With the recent proliferation of the EP in the music world, Tonedeff set out to put a new thematic slant on the format by using each EP to showcase a different facet of his personality, which when collected, form a larger more cohesive unit.

Polymer will consist of 4 separate EPs. Each EP presents a different face or “molecule” of Tonedeff. (Think Voltron, but without the lions). Each EP will be denoted by the Polymer icon located on each cover, with a new molecule filled-in for each release. EP’s 1 through 3 will be released digitally, with the fourth exclusively available on the final assembled version of the physical collector’s edition of Polymer. All music on the project has been produced synthetically to follow along the idea of an actual Polymer’s synthetic structure.

Wale comes to his MMG boss’ defense when discussing the recent attempt on Rick Ross’ life.

Everyone has their own opinion on Rick Ross’ recent drive-by shooting, and although we’ve heard much from the media on the situation, we haven’t heard from Rick Ross’ closest friends, his MMG members. Wale recently spoke out on the situation, and how it’s being perceived by the media.

Rick Ross, while driving with a female passenger following a birthday dinner the other week, was shot at around 18 times, before crashing his car into a building. In the end, neither Rozay nor his female friend were harmed.

Commenting on his friend’s situation, the D.C. rapper says he thinks the media is perpetuating a lot of things, and he’s not a fan of the jokes.

“I think the whole thing been blown. I think the media is perpetuating a lot of things. God forbid something happen to anybody, that they gunna be playing people’s records all day and acting like they [care], and everybody who’s making jokes,” Wale continued, ”I had to unfollow a rack of people on Twitter when that was happening ’cause I’m like, it’s a joke to y’all ’cause y’all see somebody on T.V. everyday. But what if that’s your friend, ’cause that’s my friend. I was talking to him last night about the football game.So what y’all think is a joke, and that somebody’s health, I know his children. God forbid something happen. And I just lost one of my brothers, so I don’t even play around with that stuff.” He added, ”And there’s a lot of power in the tongue.”

THE AUTUMN MIXTAPE | A collection of songs that remind me of the fall season.

Up:

Composition- Structurally, it’s very typical where Tablo and Mithra trade off verses, Bom handles the bridge and then there’s a sort of victory chant before the next verse. I switch off between liking the “Up up baby we’re going up” phrase. The MV to this song was superior to Don’t Hate Me for me just in the way it was shot, the freedom EH seemed to have, and how it related to me.

Verses- Again, it’s very typical Tablo then Mithra then Tablo then Mithra, etc etc but Tablo does get focus in some of the bridgework. I do wish Mithra had stronger presence in this song, considering how much airtime Tablo already gets

Beat- This beat reminds me a bit of a more well-executed Big Bang song… There are a lot of layers to the song, but I wouldn’t call it anything complex. I would’ve liked to see more blending of instruments and more risks being taken.

Overall- Of the two title songs, I definitely like this one much better. I think it’s most successful in bridging the gap between their “old” sound and more modern beats. I also like how it’s such an anthem song— similar to Run— without being too overbearing, but the chanting can get tiring after a few listens.

Don’t Hate Me:

Composition- With the electric guitar/ drums, etc and the way that they’re rapping, the song reminds me very much of an old-school “teen-spirit” song.

Verses- I think the verses are more fluid on this song. Tablo and Mithra flow into one another’s lines by providing overlap at the end of each verse, so that makes the song more interesting to listen to

Beat- Honestly, I don’t see much difference between this beat and the one used in Up. They’re both rock-inspired without much thought going into the beats. At like 2:45, there’s an attempt to mix different sounds with the reggae-esque drum (?) but it only lasted a few seconds and was really not that successful

Overall- This song is definitely a grower.

사랑한다면 해선 안될 말:

Composition- That pause at 1:45 is everything! It’s such a nice break from this smooth song and it doesn’t distract from it which I appreciate the most.

Verses- I almost feel as if Tablo and Mithra are relaxing on the verses to let Tukutz’ beat shine through, and it really works for the song. I prefer it when their voices are somewhat low and soft, but that’s a matter of opinion.

Beat- It’s so warm, which is a nice relief from this weather to be honest. The beat in the chorus reminds me of the Beach Boys, and I mean that in a complimentary way. I think Tukutz did a great job of mixing beats without overwhelming us listeners. I LOVE the introduction of the 70’s (?) synth beats, it adds another dimension to the track.

Overall- I love this song. It’s so soft and carefree, but it doesn’t sound like they’ve lost themselves in the modern shuffle. Everything moved so fluidly from the verses to the beat, it’s definitely one of the most successful songs on the album. This is really how you do “new sound” correctly.

춥다 (It’s Cold ft. Lee Hayi):

Not actually gonna break this one down since I’ve already given my opinon elsewhere. It’s a nice throwback to the sound that High Skoolers are used to.

아까워 (ft. Gaeko of Dynamic Duo)

Composition- This track features vocals— as many of their songs do— and yet, there’s something different about it. Unlike past songs, where Tablo and Mithra would do verses and then bring in the chorus with the singer, there’s much more overlap occuring between the rhymes, the singing, and the beatboxing. This might be the best compositional song on the album.

Verses- “Drop the sticks, bring in the lips” UGH, that’s wonderful. Tablo and Mithra overlap each other’s verses and it really seems like they’re working together

Beat- I love it when EH features beat-boxers on their songs, it brings in that element of the past and makes it sound so raw. And then that guitar is introduced?! This is what I was looking for when I heard Tukutz wanted to do something new! This combination of sounds really shouldn’t work, and yet here we have a beautiful song

Overall- Definitely a top song, if not THE top song of this album.

악당 (The Bad Guy)

Composition-I love the tension that comes from Tablo pausing between “I don’t just make money” and “I kill bills.” That interaction between the words and beat (which carries the words) is a subtle, but effective way to illustrate the teamwork in this group.

Verses- Tablo once again takes the chorus, but that leaves Mithra able to start off with his verse. In fact, Mithra is really able to shine in this song, which is usually rare unless he has a solo song. This is a case where I really cannot wait to look up the lyrics.

Beat- The song starts you off thinking that it’s going to be another rock-inspired track, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear that it takes more influence from James Bond-esque spy movies. I appreciate that it plays off of the title of this song “The Bad Guy” by relating it to these “heroic” spies who often do take the role of a bad person. Personally, I adore this beat.

Overall- This song does a lot of great things: letting Mithra shine, having an interesting and complex beat, actually showing interaction between the MCs and the DJ, musical tension. To say the least, I really appreciate this song and all that it does.

Kill This Love

Composition-I honestly have no complaints about the composition of this song.

Verses- I get the feeling that this is the song that EH had the most freedom over. I feel like there was more passion when they’re delivering their verses over the other songs. Perhaps they’re working off of the energy that Tukutz provides, but Tablo and Mithra and definitely more dynamic here.

Beat- This beat is a really beautiful piece of music, it’s really exactly the type of song that I adore. There’s so much variation and yet it still feels like it’s all a part of the same song. Notice just how many different genres are addressed in this single, 4 minute song, it’s rather amazing that it’s able to stay so cohesive.

Overall- This, along with Ah-Ga-Woe are by far my favorite songs on this album. They blow everything out of the water. But this is a double-edged sword, because in this song, we see just how great the album could’ve been if there was this much experimentation and passion through each song.

New Beautiful

Composition- Here we have another “anthem” song, there’s some overlap being played off between Tablo and Mithra’s verses, but Tablo takes the chorus and leaves Mithra a bit in the background.

Verses-I can’t really remember where Mithra raps in this song, which should tell you something about the status about this. The whole song is very chorus- driven, but not necessarily in a sell-out pop way (if that makes sense).

Beat-The beat reminds me of Up in the sense that it’s sort of like a much more well-executed Big Bang song. I do like the fusion between rock and alternative, it works very well for this song. I could even go into how the beat is a direct representation of the song’s message, but that’s for another time…

Overall- This song is another grower. Because I’ve listened to it several times, I’m picking up more details that I had missed previously but I do think it’s the worst non-title track on the album. That being said, Tuktuz’ beats really shine here, but Mithra fades in the back.
